What is heartburn?

Heartburn, also known as acid reflux, is a very common condition. It occurs when acid released in the stomach during digestion travels upward toward the throat, resulting in a burning sensation in the chest.


The human body has a valve at the bottom of the esophagus that normally keeps stomach acid… well, in the stomach! If this valve is dysfunctional, however, it can open when it shouldn’t, allowing acid to flow back up or “reflux.”

Common symptoms

  • Sour taste in the mouth
  • Hoarse voice, especially in the morning
  • Sore throat that won’t go away
  • Chronic cough or frequent hiccups
  • Nausea
  • Dental problems, such as loss of tooth enamel

You can reduce acid reflux by making some simple changes. Eat slowly and chew food thoroughly. Reduce your consumption of alcohol, coffee, refined sugar, cheese and processed meat. Avoid spicy meals, as these can upset the stomach. Incorporate heartburn-friendly foods — think olive oil, turmeric, bananas, potatoes (with peel), carrots and avocados — into your diet.
