4 Tips for Growing Your Own Garden

These days, people are increasingly growing their own food in an attempt to become more
self-sufficient. If you’re thinking about doing the same, here are a few pointers on how to get
your garden off to a good start.

Find the right location

The first thing to do when starting a garden is to determine the best spot for it. Look for a
location that gets lots of sun throughout the day. A southwest-facing garden is ideal. If part of
your garden is less exposed to sunshine, use it to grow things like arugula, radishes and
spinach, which do better in partial shade.

Prepare your soil

Most people who start a garden dig up part of their lawn to do it. It is important to dig down 5 cm
(2”) and remove all the grass and roots with a hoe. Then loosen up the earth with a broadfork so
that the roots of your new plants have plenty of room to grow and get the nutrients they need
from the soil. Make sure to sink the tines of the fork deep enough to aerate the substrate. When
you are done, smooth out the surface with a rake. If you’d rather not get your hands quite so
dirty, you can always buy a raised planter box for your yard or your balcony.

Buy your plants

It’s best to wait until there’s no threat of frost during the night before planting your vegetables,
fruits or herbs. Here are some of the easiest and most prolific plants you can grow:

  • Tomatoes
  • Eggplant
  • Zucchini
  • Carrots
  • Herbs (thyme, mint, parsley, basil)

Think ahead

The secret to good gardening is good planning, now and in the months to come. Try to alternate
fast-growing spring and summer plants with those that will be harvested in the fall, such as
carrots, celery and rutabaga.
